A new salad recipe is ready, but you only need 200 labels.

Then an ingredient changes. A barcode needs to be replaced. The dressing is now sold separately, so that needs its own label too.

For food producers working with several products and short production runs, labels can become surprisingly difficult to manage. Ordering every design from an outside supplier often means minimum quantities, waiting for delivery, and storing rolls of labels that may become outdated before they are used.

That is where in-house food label printing starts to make sense.

Salad labels rarely stay the same for long

A salad producer may use the same container for several recipes, but the labels are rarely identical.

The product name, ingredients, nutrition information, dressing, barcode, and production details may all change from one product to another. Seasonal recipes and limited runs add even more variations.

The usual choice is to order a large quantity of each design or pay more for a short run. Neither option is ideal if the label may need to be revised a few weeks later.

Printing food labels in-house gives you another option. You can produce enough labels for the current batch, update the file when something changes, and print the next quantity when it is needed. There is less pressure to predict how many labels you will use months in advance.

Printing salad labels with the ANY-002

For this application, we used the ANY-002, an 8-inch digital label printer based on LED toner technology.

With a print width of up to 215 mm, it can handle different food label sizes and layouts. The same printer can be used for narrow dressing bottle labels, standard product labels, or wider designs such as the band label shown on this salad container.

Because the container is clear, we designed the label to leave most of the ingredients visible. The label carries the product name and branding without hiding the food inside.

The ANY-002 can reproduce small text, fine graphics, photographs, and colors clearly. Details such as ingredient information, barcodes, and QR codes remain easy to read, even when several elements are included in one design.

Preparing food label jobs with ANY-RIP

Food labels usually include more than a logo and product name.

Depending on the product, you may need to add a barcode, QR code, lot number, manufacturing date, expiration date, or other information that changes between batches.

ANY-RIP, the label printing software used with the ANY-002, helps users prepare print files and manage color settings without making the process unnecessarily complicated.

Depending on the artwork and production workflow, users can prepare:

• Barcodes and QR codes
• Manufacturing and expiration dates
• Lot or batch numbers
• Sequential or variable information
• Color settings for consistent output
• Black marks for digital finishing and laser cutting

If the labels will be finished with a digital cutter, black marks can be included in the artwork. The finishing equipment reads these marks to locate the printed design and cut it in the correct position.

Not every label job needs thousands of copies

Short-run production is one of the main reasons food businesses consider bringing label printing in-house.

You may need a few hundred labels for a new salad, a seasonal recipe, a local promotion, or a product test. If the product sells well, you can print more. If the design needs to be changed, you can revise it before producing the next roll.

There is no need to keep using an old label simply because too many were ordered.

This is also useful for food businesses managing many SKUs. Instead of storing large quantities of every design, labels can be printed in smaller batches based on current demand.

From salad containers to dressing bottles

Although we used a salad label for this test, the same setup can cover many other packaged food products.

A salad company may need one label for the main container and separate designs for dressing bottles, topping packs, meal kits, or promotional products. Each one may use a different label size, but not necessarily enough volume to justify a large order.

Food label applications for the ANY-002 include:

For refrigerated or frozen products, the label material and adhesive matter just as much as the printing method. They should be selected according to the packaging surface, storage temperature, moisture, and condensation the label may encounter.

Testing the finished label on the actual package and under its real storage conditions is always recommended.

More freedom to try different label designs

Digital printing also gives food producers more freedom to test new ideas.

You can try a new color, change the label size, prepare several design variations, or create a custom shape without ordering a large quantity of every version. Once printed, the labels can be finished with compatible digital cutting equipment.

This works particularly well with clear food containers. A narrow or custom-shaped label can carry the necessary product information while still allowing customers to see the ingredients inside.

Is in-house food label printing right for your business?

In-house printing will not replace every outsourced label order. Large-volume jobs with a fixed design may still be better suited to a professional label converter.

But if you regularly need small batches, manage several products, or make frequent changes to your labels, having a printer on-site can make day-to-day production much easier.

You can print the labels needed for the current batch, make changes when necessary, and avoid filling storage space with designs you may never use.
