Turning Down RFQs You Shouldn’t Have to Refuse
A craft brewery calls with a familiar request:
“We need 500 transparent labels for a seasonal IPA.”

For many label converters, this is where the conversation ends.
Offset or flexo presses require plates, dies, and setup processes that only make sense at volumes of several thousand labels. A 500-label job simply isn’t economical.
Alternatively, CMYK-only digital samples are produced on transparent film—but without a white base, the colors appear washed out. The customer rejects the sample, and the order is lost anyway.
These are not one-off opportunities. Craft beverage brands operate on frequent seasonal releases, limited editions, and experimental SKUs. Every declined RFQ increases the likelihood that these customers turn to competitors who can support short-run production.
Why Traditional Printing Struggles with Short-Run Transparent Labels
Offset & Flexo: Setup Economics Don’t Scale Down
Traditional analog printing relies on plates, dies, and precise registration. While this delivers efficiency at scale, the fixed setup costs make short runs unprofitable. When customers need hundreds of labels—not thousands—the business case breaks down.
CMYK Digital on Transparent Film: A Physical Limitation
CMYK printing relies on subtractive color mixing, which assumes a white, reflective substrate.
- On white paper: Light reflects through CMYK inks → vibrant, accurate color
- On transparent film: No reflective base → reduced opacity and muted color
This is not a calibration issue. It’s a physics problem. Increasing ink density alone cannot replace the missing white foundation.
External White Ink Systems: Added Complexity
Some solutions introduce separate white ink units or pre-coated white films. These approaches often require:
- Additional equipment investment
- Multi-pass printing and registration alignment
- Increased maintenance and operational complexity
- Large minimum orders for specialty media
For many converters, this creates more friction than value—especially for short runs.
